I spoke with Greg Statton, Office of the CTO – Data & AI at Cohesity, about Cohesity Gaia. He told me about an early access customer working in materials innovation who has been using the tool for a while. He shared that she told him she took the tool and gave it to researchers across the globe and they started putting their data into it, and that they were impressed with how easily it turned their data into shareable knowledge.
Data is often described as the new oil. However, like crude oil, raw data needs to be refined to be valuable. Cohesity Gaia promises to accomplish that by transforming vast data lakes into actionable insights. Statton described how Cohesity Gaia enhances productivity and unlocks the latent potential within an organization’s data assets.

Privacy and Security at the Forefront
One of the persistent challenges with generative AI—at least at this early stage—is the quality and accuracy of the data it is trained on. The ability to interact with information conversationally is great, but only if you can trust that the response is correct.
In a recent podcast episode, Sam Curry, VP and CISO at Zscaler, talked about some of the challenges of working with a broad generative AI model like ChatGPT and how the results can only be based on the data the model has available. He described how he asked ChatGPT to write an article, but that he wanted it to be unique so he specified up front to avoid talking about the same 6 things everyone typically points out, and instead to delve into the 6 areas he provided. “I said, ‘Use these 6 things, write me a paper,’ and it wrote a paper with the things I said don’t use because nobody has written about the other six. Because it doesn’t exist yet.”
Statton explained, “What’s different here is that we’ve given the ability for the customer to take their clean backup data and marry it to that conversation with an on-demand retrieval of context.”
Data security is also important. Even within an organization, there are various roles with different levels of permissions and access. You can’t allow a tool like Cohesity Gaia to enable any user to access any and all data.
It’s imperative to provide a secure way to leverage AI without exposing sensitive data. Ensuring that businesses can harness the power of AI without compromising on security is particularly crucial for industries with stringent compliance requirements.
Statton described how the tool allows an organization to maintain granular, role-based access controls and zero trust security principles to ensure that only authorized users or applications can access data.

Statton walked me through a demo to show me how Cohesity Gaia works. I can see how having a user-friendly interface and conversational approach to data interaction has the potential to democratize access to information, enabling a broad spectrum of users to benefit from the organization’s data.
The ability to interact with information and search conversationally means that not just IT professionals but also compliance officers, researchers, and other stakeholders can easily engage with data, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making across the enterprise.
